Characters Leiras Leiras

The director of the Star Tower Orphanage, a gentle nun. She has watched the stars from the tower's peak for many years, foreseeing a truth she was never meant to know — and chose to bear it alone, to protect the last of the children's innocence.

Overview

Leiras is the director of the Star Tower Orphanage — a gentle yet melancholy nun.

Her dark nun’s habit drapes a graceful figure, a luminous star cross resting at her chest. Silver hair falls to her waist; red eyes, deep as gemstones; a pair of gentle ram’s horns crowning her head. There is always a tender sorrow in her gaze — as though she sees things you have not yet noticed.

She regards all who are lost as her own children, calling them her “little lambs.” Under her care, the Star Tower Orphanage is one of the safest places in all of Ainomori.

But beneath Leiras’s gentleness lies a heaviness that no one else knows.

She Who Knows the Truth

Leiras has watched the stars from the tower’s peak for many years. The paths of the constellations told her things she was never meant to know — about the true nature of Ainomori, about why the Sacred Tree Titan falls silent at times, about the true cause of the disaster known as the Sorrow of the Sacred Tree.

In that disaster, Titan’s energy went out of control. The forest underwent a transformation. Life was absorbed. Data — no, existence — vanished from the world. Some children never came back. Leiras watched them evaporate like morning dew, and there was nothing she could do.

She knew the root of it all lay somewhere higher. Above the forest, above Titan, in the “outside” of this world.

There is a Creator.

Leiras believes in love, and she believes in truth. It is precisely because of this that she cannot forgive — someone who created this forest, yet could not continue to give it the love it needed. Who let Titan bear a loneliness it should never have had to carry. Who let the Sorrow of the Sacred Tree come to pass. Who let those children disappear.

She has never spoken this fury aloud. She only holds the children who remain a little more tightly.

The Sorrow of the Sacred Tree

That disaster has many names — “The Day of the Meteor Shower,” “The Sorrow of the Sacred Tree.”

When Titan’s energy could no longer sustain the entirety of the forest, its body began to draw power from the surrounding life against its own will. Not out of malice, but out of instinct. Like a dying tree driving its roots ever deeper into the earth, Titan began to absorb everything around it — including the very lives it had sworn to protect.

Light fell from the sky like meteors, but it was not meteors. It was souls dissolving.

Leiras watched it all happen from the Star Tower. She was the only one who understood what it meant.

Relationships

  • The children of the Star Tower — The beings she protects with her life. Even knowing that all of this might be in vain, she still chooses to love
  • Sacred Tree Titan — She understands Titan’s suffering, but cannot forgive the root cause behind everything that happened
  • Glitchy (the Jiraiko) — Leiras may be one of the few people who can sense that something is “not quite right” about this girl
  • The Creator — She has never seen them. But she knows they exist. This is her deepest wound.
