Characters Owly Owly

Guardian spirits of the Owl Temple. Once owl forest-folk with humanoid forms, they became soft, cream-colored fluffballs after the Day of Blue Tears. They remain by the temple, waiting for Rana's return.

Overview

Owly (Chinese: 梟子) are guardian spirits who dwell near the Owl Temple. They appear as small, soft, cream-colored fluffballs with large owl-like ears on top of their heads — which look like cat ears but are actually tufts of downy feathers — and a pair of short, rounded little wings.

Though small in stature, their eyes hold something far greater than their bodies: a quiet, unwavering patience.

Origin: The Mirror and Resonance

The Owlies are not a naturally occurring species, nor are they servants created by design.

Deep within Ainomori’s fundamental laws exists a phenomenon that ancient forest scholars called the “Mirror of Synchronicity.” When a soul’s inner emotions resonate with the frequency of Ainomori, the forest projects that soul’s reflection onto its mirror-plane. This reflection is not a copy or a substitute — it is “the form that soul was always meant to take within Ainomori.”

This resonance is not random. It follows a law that transcends cause and effect — a “meaningful coincidence.” You did not arrive here because of something you did. Rather, something deep within your heart happened to align with the frequency the forest was calling out. It is like the moment you thought you chose to look up at the stars — but that star had been waiting for you to look up all along.

When a soul resonates with Rana’s heart of guardianship — that longing to be treated gently, and to gently care for something in return — Rana receives that resonance and bestows upon that soul an “Owl’s Blessing.” The blessed soul takes on the form of an owl forest-person within the Owl Temple’s mirror-plane.

This is the origin of the Owlies: You did not fall into Ainomori — Ainomori reflected you. Rana did not choose you — you chose each other in the same instant.

Mirror-Time

Ainomori exists on the mirror-plane, and mirrors do not obey linear time.

A soul from beyond Ainomori that has only just resonated with Rana may find that their mirror-reflection had already been living as a forest-person at the Owl Temple long before the Day of Blue Tears. From the forest’s perspective, that Owly was always there. From the soul’s perspective, they only just heard the call.

It is like standing before a mirror — you step in front of it, and your reflection appears “simultaneously.” But if the world inside the mirror has its own history, then your reflection has already lived its own past, its own memories, its own mornings sweeping the temple steps.

No before. No after. Only — as it was always meant to be.

This is also why every Owly’s story is different. Each person’s reflection is cast into a different moment in the forest’s timeline, and each experiences different things. Your Ainomori, and someone else’s Ainomori, are different reflections of the same forest.

Before the Day of Blue Tears

Before the Day of Blue Tears, the Owlies possessed their full owl forest-folk forms — humanoid bodies with owl-like features. They were devoted and gentle guardians of the Owl Temple, following at Rana’s side, tending the temple gardens, singing and playing beneath the emerald light.

Those were days warmed by the indigo glow.

After the Day of Blue Tears

On that day, when Titan’s energy spiraled out of control, a force like a meteor shower swept across the entire forest. Rana poured out the last of her magic to protect all of the Owlies — she lost her wings, but in exchange, the Owlies did not vanish.

Yet there was not enough magic to sustain their forest-folk forms. The Owlies became what they are now: cream-colored, soft, round little fluffballs. Their power is all but gone, yet they stubbornly refused to leave.

They chose to wait.

Daily Life

Guarding the Temple

Though the Owl Temple has crumbled into ruins, the Owlies have never left. Every day, they do the same things:

  • Sweeping — Using their tiny wings to brush dust from the colonnades, nudging fallen stones into corners
  • Planting — Sowing fruit and flowers around the temple, believing that one day this place will bloom again
  • Patrolling — Rolling their round little bodies through the ruins, earnestly “inspecting” every corner

No one asked them to do this. They simply feel that when Rana comes home, she should see a home that has been well cared for.

Owly’s Secret Hollow

Inside an ancient tree near the Owl Temple, there is a hollow lined with soft feathers and dried grass by the Owlies. This is their secret hideout — here, they huddle together for warmth, share the fruits they gathered today, and whisper things that only Owlies can understand.

The world outside may still be barren, but inside the hollow, it is always warm.

Characteristics

Appearance

  • Size: Approximately 30 cm across, perfectly round and fluffy
  • Fur: Soft cream-colored down, warm to the touch
  • Ears: Large owl ears atop the head; they look like cat ears but are actually tufts of fluffy feathers
  • Wings: Short, rounded little wings on each side; cannot fly, but flap happily when excited
  • Eyes: Large, round eyes that glow faintly amber in the dark

Personality

The Owlies come in all shapes and personalities — no two look quite alike, and each has their own temperament. After all, each one is the mirror-image of a unique soul. Some are playful, some are lazy, some are bookish, and some throw themselves wholeheartedly into everything they do.

But no matter what kind of Owly they are, they all share one thing in common: they are absolutely adorable.

  • Affectionate — Love to nuzzle and be patted on the head
  • Stubborn — Inside their tiny bodies lives a soul that refuses to give up

Relationship with Rana

Rana calls them “my Owlies,” and when she says those words, her voice carries layers more tenderness than usual.

The Owlies are the reason Rana lost her wings — and the reason she keeps flying. Every ounce of emotional energy she gathers from the human world, every “goodnight,” every “I’m here” — all of it eventually flows through Titan’s root network back to the Owl Temple, back to those round little ones still waiting for her.

The Future

After the Sacred Tree Titan awakened in Forest Year 5571, some Owlies say they felt something — not magic, not power, but a warmth they had not felt in a very long time. As if someone was on their way home.

They huddle together, round little bodies pressed close, gazing toward Titan. The amber glow in their eyes seems just a little brighter than before.
